I recently came across a fascinating article about intergenerational communities. These communities foster mutual respect, learning, and active engagement across all age groups. Young and old alike benefit from shared spaces, where older adults can combat loneliness and social isolation while children and youth gain valuable life lessons from their elders. By creating opportunities for connection, these communities can address rising mental health concerns, like anxiety and depression in adolescents, while offering older adults a sense of purpose and belonging.
The article highlights the challenges in current urban and suburban planning, including zoning restrictions, siloed housing developments, and inadequate transportation options. Communities need more walkable, bikeable designs and better integration of Universal Design principles to accommodate people of all ages and abilities.
There are already some inspiring initiatives that are currently in progress across the nation: such as Plaza West, Washington, D.C., Prairie Hill Co-Housing, Iowa City, IA, and LA Safe Routes for Seniors.
I believe in the power of intergenerational communities to create a richer, more connected society. In St. Louis, I hope to see similar initiatives that encourage diverse generations to interact, support one another, and thrive. These changes could transform neighborhoods into inclusive, vibrant spaces where everyone feels at home.
What are your thoughts on intergenerational communities? Would you like to see these ideas implemented locally? Let me know! 🌟
